The fund was set up in memory of our parents and to pay tribute to other members of our family. This is so that we might donate cash in a continuous honouring of our loved ones whenever we wish to do so, for example, on the anniversaries of their death, or their birthdays, or special events. We often hear it said that we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. We reap what they sowed. We enjoy freedom, choice and a degree of affluence because earlier generations of people cared enough and fought for a better life for those coming after them. CAFOD’s Candlelight Fund gives us a unique opportunity to look back with grateful thanks and reach forward to those whose struggle is now: for survival amidst terrible ordeals and suffering. On 9 March 2011 we were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Conan. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend of many. His early death shook us. On 5th May 2018, Bridie, our aunt, died a few weeks before her 97th birthday. She was an important and significant presence throughout our lives, and a great friend. One way we can channel our sadness in a positive way is to donate to the Candlelight Fund on their behalf. That way, their spirit for doing good survives and will flourish.
